Norland's side-stream ozone systems
are complete frame-mounted modules designed
specifically for high-quality bottled
water operations. Two standard systems
are available: The SSOZ-25A produces
enough ozone to treat up to 25 gallons
(95 L) per minute. The SSOZ-50A produces
up to 50 gallons (189 L) per minute.
Larger-capacity systems are available
on request. These compact systems are
designed to keep ozone residual levels
from 0.1-0.4 mg/L. The system utilizes
an air-cooled, patented “Cold
Spark” Corona Discharge Generator.
This technology allows the production
of a high concentration of ozone while
generating very little heat, eliminating
the need for additional water-cooling
mechanisms for the ozone tubes.
Norland's “side-stream”
ozone systems are reliable, cost-efficient
and easy to maintain. In this process,
product water is drawn from a storage
tank by the integral stainless steel
repressurization pump. Part of the water
flowing through this pump is “side-streamed”
through another stainless steel pump,
which drives the water through a Venturi
Injector Assembly where ozone is injected
into the water. This side-stream of
ozonated water is then routed to the
contact tank, where it is mixed well
with the main flow of product water
from the repressurization pump before
delivery to a filler system.
Standard System Features Norland's SSOZ-25A and SSOZ-50A
Ozone generator systems are designed
to provide effective mixing and mass
transfer of the ozone and product water
prior to entering the filler. The stainless
steel contact tank further increases
the effectiveness level of ozone in
the product water by allowing adequate
contact time of ozone with the product
water.

Ozone Generator Systems
Ozone is an unstable, colorless gas,
a powerful oxidizer and a potent germicide.
It has a much higher disinfection potential
than other disinfectants such as chlorine.
Ozone consists of three parts of oxygen.
Once ozone is generated, it takes a
short time for it to break apart and
return to its natural form of oxygen.
As this phenomenon occurs, the free
atom of oxygen will seek out any foreign
particles in the water and be attracted
to them. This action creates an environment
where bacteria or organic matter virtually
disintegrate when they come in contact
with this free oxygen molecule. This
in turn protects water from waterborne,
bacterial contamination. Ozone water
purification is used in the bottled
water industry because it controls the
growth of bacteria in water. It is desirable
because it can do this without leaving
a residual taste, such as you would
find with chlorine.
The variables determining the effectiveness
of ozone in killing bacteria are contact
time and residual ozone concentration
achieved in the product water. This
ozone concentration residual is first
dependent on how much ozone is injected
into the product water and then the
amount of ozone demand in the water.
The lower the total dissolved solids
level, the higher the solubility of
the ozone.
